Oh I was so so so happy to finally return to this universe, where Fables live alongside the Mundys (they call us Mundane, or Mundys). This volume felt like the calm between the storms, after March of the Wooden Soliders with it’s war and many revelations and the coming stories in Homelands.
I’m still relatively new to the graphic novel ‘verse (incidentally, there is an really great article about graphic novels in this months Playboy *blush*) so I have little basis for comparison. I can’t jump out there and say these are the best written comics and it sounds kinda silly to say they are the best written I’ve ever read. But, suffice to say, they are really well written! This guy really knows his fables, bringing in characters from all over the place, some I’m quite sure are going over my head because they are so obscure. Which is great, it makes me want to look them up!

Heather,
I’m actually submitting a proposal to the International Comics Association Festival in DC over the way Willingham reassigns gender roles in the books. It should be a fun paper, and I looove talkin’ about these books.
Many of the characters went over my head (Wieland Smith), but there were some surprisingly good entries on it at Wikipedia. Go figure!

Oh, I didn’t think to check Wikipedia!
Here’s a website I found that has lots of helpful information about the books. Plus, I found out there is a proposed TV series, text book with illustrations, a spin-off series for Jack of Tales, and, sadly, it confirmed my hypothesis as to who the Adversary was. At least I was right! But I didn’t really want to find out until Book 6.
Anyway, here’s the addy:

Of course, you know, I’m going to have to read anything you write about Fables. I mean really. You know this, right?
