Funkalicious

This has been one of those weeks where I have to force myself to talk. Not only on my blog but in my life as well. I just feel like I don’t have anything much to say. I’ve been very…trapped…inside my head lately. Thinking about things; my life, work, the direction it’s all taking. It’s kind of depressing. And I am in a funk of sorts, which became worse when I realized I had an OB appointment yesterday, that I didn’t need, but meant that I would have heard the heartbeat yesterday. It just broke my heart all over again.

Thank God for books. And thank God my funk hasn’t touched my reading yet. After supper last night I curled up with the kid and read Little Women while she watched Baby Einsteins Baby Bach. It was a relief to loose myself with the lovely March girls and the handsome Laurie.

christian_bale.jpgI had forgotten how much of a crush I had on Laurie when I read this for the first time. I must have been about 12 or so and I thought Laurie was the perfect guy.  He may have been my first literary crush.  I think Laurie is still pretty hot.  Doesn’t hurt I picture Christian Bale whilst reading either.

Well, after a couple of chapters of Little Women I switched over to The Woman in White. Dang this is getting good! I had forgotten how much I love a good mystery!  Anne Catherick has just reappeared on the scene and I’m dying to know her secrets. I can’t wait until lunch so I can read.

  1. I’m not that far in Woman in White yet. I am really enjoying it though. Unfortunately…or fortunately…the release of Neil Gaiman’s new book Fragile Things has interrupted my other reading. I tried to resist starting it but just couldn’t.

I’m sorry about your heartbreak and wish I could say something to help other than that.

Christian Bale makes a great Laurie. Its funny to watch that and see him in it after seeing movies like Reign of Fire and Batman Begins. He seems so young and innocent in the role.

  2. I clicked submit too soon! I also wanted to say that you’ve been in my thoughts these past few weeks and that I’m still so very sorry about the baby. You have had far too much sadness (and I don’t believe in that crap about only being given what you can handle).

  3. I too think Christian Bale was a total cutie in that movie. In fact, I just bought in on DVD so I can watch it again after finishing the book.

Hope you are out of your funk (and feeling better) soon.

  4. Hugs for ya, first of all. Many many hugs.

Second, I shouldn’t admit this amongst the bookish, but I have yet to read Little Women!!!! It could be the ultimate shame. 🙂

  5. You’re gonna get squished some more . . . lots of hugs.

It’s apparently been too long since I’ve seen Little Women. Christian Bale was in it? Cool! I thought you’d just done a great “mental casting” job.

We’re going to have to find a copy of Little Women for Andi. I’ll keep my eyes peeled. And, Women in White is just going to have to get bumped up the list. I’m really dying to read it, now.

  6. Andi you are not alone, I’ve never read it either. Or seen any film version of it.

Heather I’m glad that books haven’t deserted you, and like everyone else I’m thinking of you. *hugs*

  7. Carl, he did seem very young and innocent. Very different from Batman. And I’m glad to hear Fragile Things is so good. I like me some Gaiman.

Les, that was just the ticket!! And yes, it does seem to me like I’ve had enough sadness for quite awhile. And I also agree about being given what you can handle. I know you and your hubby had more than enough as well.

Stephanie, I may have to see if it’s going to be on TV soon and TiVo it. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again myself.

Thanks Amanda! I don’t know what I’d do without my books. And of course the hubby and Ellie, they help too 😉

ANDI! I am shocked and scandalized. No, not really, I’m kidding. There were a few I missed growing up. I didn’t read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn until I was in my early 20s. There’s still time!!

Nancy, I am having trouble putting TWiW down! It’s SO good!

Nat, how was the musical? It seems like an odd choice of book-to-musical to me, but sounds interesting as well.

Fence, you haven’t read it either?!? Or seen a movie version?!? Wow!

And thank you, EVERYONE, for the kindness, hugs, and encouragement. You have all be a great source of comfort to me. Ugh, I’m going to cry. Damn.

  8. I know I saw the movie and don’t remember Christian Bale! Gah. Must re-watch it.

I’m so sorry you are still going through a rough time. I can’t even imagine. I wish you a good weekend, with lots of comfort reads and a great time with your family.

  9. The musical was really good actually. They changed a few things, as always happens in translations to film or whatnot but I think they kept the spirit of it. The music itself wasn’t as memorable as some other musicals, imo, but the staging was very unique, in a good way.
